Resolved CCS Exam Requirements Notes in Manuals

Can I Use the BHAT® Method on AHIMA Exams?

Codebooks with handwritten notations or comments are allowed but must be free of any notes containing coding rules and guidelines from other reference materials (for example Coding Clinic, CPT Assistant, and similar materials). No handmade tabs will be allowed. Post-It® Notes and any loose materials are not allowed (codebooks are for use on CCA, CCS, and CCS-P exams only). The testing center staff reserves the right to deny codebooks that contain excessive writing and information that may give the candidate an unfair advantage.

I'm taking the CCS and AHIMA checks books for excessive notes or highlighting. Has anyone had an issue with this when taking an AHIMA certification exam?
I took the CCS in 2019, my ICD-10 book was highlighted and annotated, I had no problem. My CPT book was too new to annotate, so it was only the ICD book that I highlighted/notated. But there was no question asked :) Hope this helps!

I've recently heard that it is possible they won't allow your manuals to be tabbed??? Something about AHIMA testing document saying no homemade tabs. My CPT manual has been BHAT-ed and I have several sections tabbed. I bought tabs from Staples but a coder said that would be homemade? My CPT manual tabbing and BHAT is what gave me speed and helped me pass the CPT exam in flying colors

We haven't heard about any changes in AHIMA testing. My original reply from Oct 4, 2021 indicates that homemade tabs are not allowed. Homemade tabs are any tabs that did not originally come with the manual.

No handmade tabs will be allowed.

Please contact AHIMA at certification@ahima.org and include a photo of your tabs so they can review and personally respond to your unique tabbing situation.
