The CPC test consists of a total of 100 Multiple Choice Questions which cover almost all of the areas that a medical coder has to be acquainted with. There are a total of seventeen different topics from where the questions come and the number of questions from each topic is fixed. The topic with the highest weightage is CPT which has 64 MCQs in the paper. Which includes 6 MCQs each from 10000, 20000, 30000, 40000, 50000, 60000 codes, radiology, pathology and laboratory codes, medicine and E& M codes and 4 MCQs from anesthesia.
Coding guidelines is the second most important topic as the CPC test contains 7 MCQs based on it, which includes the ICD-10-CM Official guideline for coding and reporting, CPT® coding guidelines and parenthetical notes, and modifier use. After this topic come the 5 MCQs on ICD-10-CM. Additionally, diagnosis questions will appear in other sections of the exam from the CPT® categories.
Next in the CPC® test come the questions on Medical terminology and Anatomy 4 MCQs each. Compliance and Regulatory 3 MCQs and HCPCS level-II 3 MCQs each.
Lastly comes the 10 MCQs on cases or case study. Each case will test your ability to accurately code medical record documentation using CPT®, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS Level II codes. Thus we have accounted for all of the 100 MCQs which appear in the CPC® test.
Approved code books; AMA's CPT® Professional Edition, ICD-10-CM and HCPCS Level II are the materials allowed for reference on the day of exam. There is total 4 hours to complete the 100 questions. You should at least attain 70 correct answers to pass the exam as the pass score is 70%.
