The 2022 icd-10-cm updates on Chapter 4: endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases has a new guideline for diabetes mellitus and the use of insulin, oral hypoglycemic and injectable non-insulin. New guideline states: If the patient is treated with both oral medications and insulin, code both Z79.4, Long term (current) use of insulin, AND code Z79.84, Long term (current) use of oral hypoglycemic drugs, should be assigned.” My question is does this new guideline apply to both Diabetes 1 and Diabetes 2? Thank you -

Yes it does

  • If a patient was maintained on insulin and oral hypoglycemic medication, instructions had previously been to only code the long-term use of insulin. In 2022, we are directed to capture in ICD-10-CM codes both the insulin and any other antidiabetic medications such as oral hypoglycemics or injectable non-insulin medications.
This would apply to both Types.
