Eligibility requirements to take the CCS exam have changed! AHIMA has eliminated the term "required" for the data elements necessary to take and pass the CCS exam. Instead, the data elements are now "recommended". This will open up lots of doors for individuals who did not meet eligibility requirements to take the CCS exam. They can now take the CCS exam. That said, taking and passing are 2 different things. Be sure to review the eligibility recommendations and the CCS Exam Outline which lists the domains and expectations for the exam. In this way, you can properly prepare to take and pass the exam. Here is the new language for eligibility; Eligibility Requirements:
While not required, one of the following are recommended to sit for the CCS examination:
Complete courses in all the following topics: anatomy & physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, reimbursement methodology, intermediate/advanced ICD diagnostic coding, and procedural coding and medical services (CPT/HCPCS) plus one (1) year of coding experience directly applying codes; OR
Minimum of two (2) years of related coding experience directly applying codes; OR
Hold the CCA® credential plus one (1) year of coding experience directly applying codes; OR
Hold a coding credential from another certifying organization plus one (1) year of coding experience directly applying codes; OR
Hold a CCS-P®, RHIT®, or RHIA® credential
