I recently passed my CPC exam and would now like to pursue a CCS from AHIMA to boost my chances for employment. However, the CCS exam is currently a beta exam and could take 6 months to get the results. I'm wording if the COC would be better to pursue for now and wait to get the CCS later when it is out of beta? Also, if I get the COC and CIC from AAPC, would getting the CCS even be worth it? Thanks.

Hi Ryan. Congrats on passing the CPC! I have read that the CCS should be out of beta within the next month. The CCS is sought after more than the CIC, so the CCS is definitely worth it. Almost all inpatient jobs want a CCS. The COC is good if you want to code the facility side. If you just want to do the physician side, then the CPC would be all you need. In my opinion, the CPC and CCS are the most important coding credentials. It all depends on what you want to code.

It all depends upon your education, training, experience and goals. The CCS credential is an "expert" level of inpatient coding (hospital inpatient), using ICD-10-CM and PCS. Most inpatient coding jobs will prefer the CCS.
If you are trying to get your foot in the door at a faciity/hospital setting, then I would advise the COC for hospital outpatient coding.
