Can you explain the meaning of organic as in "organic insomnia"? How does it differ from "non-organic insomnia"? The medical dictionary did not help.

If the insomnia is caused by a physical change in the structure of an organ, such as the brain or thyroid, it is called organic insomnia. If the insomnia is caused by drinking too much coffee, we say it is non-organic insomnia.

From my research, I understand organic insomnia to be a type of insomnia that is caused by a medical condition. A medical condition that cause a person to lose sleep due to a disease or disorder, such as heart disease, asthma, snoring, obstructive sleep apnea, etc. Other medical disorders can include those that cause pain, such as arthritis, headache disorders, and peptic ulcers.

Whereas, non-organic insomnia is when the quantity and/or quality of sleep is inadequate for the person. This condition would also persists for a considerable period of time, at least 3 times a week for a month These situation usually applies to people who have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up too early and not being able to fall back asleep. Non-organic disorders are manifested through distressing experiences, such as pain or anxiety or through undesirable behavior, such as abuse of alcohol. The sleep disturbance can also interfere with a person's personal function in their daily life.
