Hi

Please can we ask for assistance with a code for the insertion of an artificial bladder. [new technology] Bioprinting human tissue using specialized 3D printers promises to transform medicine, with implications for organ transplants, cancer treatment and antibiotic development.

Thanks
Erna

I have a couple questions. Since it is new technology that always makes it more interesting. Do you have a source of who is creating the bladder? That will be your source of which CPT code to use. I can help you make that contact and show you how to ask the right questions.
Otherwise I don't think you are going to find a specific code. I will check with my peers as well.

To help you with a CPT code for the insertion of an artificial bladder, I'll need to provide some context and then the most relevant code.

The insertion of an artificial bladder, also known as a bladder prosthesis or neobladder, is a complex urological procedure. It's typically performed when a patient's natural bladder needs to be removed, often due to cancer or other severe bladder conditions.

The most appropriate CPT code for this procedure is:

51596 - Cystectomy, complete, with continent diversion, any technique, using any segment of small and/or large intestine to construct neobladder

This code covers the complete removal of the bladder (cystectomy) and the creation of a new bladder (neobladder) using a segment of the patient's intestine. The "continent diversion" part means that the new bladder allows for controlled urination, as opposed to an incontinent diversion where urine continuously drains into an external bag.

It's important to note that this code is for the creation of a neobladder using the patient's own tissue. If you're referring to the insertion of a completely artificial bladder device, there might be a different or more specific code. However, as of my last update, fully artificial bladders were still largely experimental and not in common clinical use.

Thanks Darcy and Alicia. If I hear anything about a complete artificial bladder device I will let you know.

I will see if I can get all the additional information for us from the doctor involved.
