CCO Admin asked:

Hey everyone! Just a bit confused on the sequencing for complications associated with neoplasms. The textbook says to sequence the complication first then the adverse effect and then the neoplasm. However; the ICD-10 guidelines state to list the complication first then the appropriate code for the neoplasm. It does not mention the adverse effect. Would someone be able to tell me the right way this should be coded?

Thank you in advance.

Answer:

You list why the patient is seen first. That would be the complication. Then the neoplasm. If the patient has an adverse affect it goes before the cancer code. Remember you are telling a story.

Why are they seen?

What happened?

They have Cancer.

1.N/V

2.New Chemo given

3.Breast Cancer

Followup question:

* Thank you! What does N/V mean?

* [Alicia Scott](3232208) sorry but the guidelines say for encounters for management of anemia associated with an adverse effect the sequencing should be:

1. Anemia code
2. Neoplasm
3. Adverse Effect
is this for Anemia only? Followup answer: N/V = Nausea & Vomiting. Yes; there is an acceptation to the rule of sequencing for Anemia associated with Cancer. You will definitely be tested on this.
