Rebecca Jaeger asked:
I am confused as to how we count the segments of a spinal procedure. For example L4-S1 is 3 segments right. On page 122 in CPT in the second example there is a posterior arthrodesis of L4-S1 it says to report them as 22612 and 22614. They are only counting two segments here. So I am confused about how we count these. Help please? Thanks again!
Answer:
The **vertebral** interspace is the non-bony compartment between two adjacent**vertebral** bodies that contains the intervertebral disc which includes the nucleus pulposus; annulus fibrosus; and two cartilagenous endplates. "Think of the **segment**as two bones and the space between;" says Pollock.Mar 21; 2012

How many vertebral segments are there in the span c6 t2?When counting vertebral segments; be mindful that a single interspace sits between**two vertebral segments**. For instance; the span C6-T2 contains **four vertebral segments** (C6; C7; T1; and T2) and **three vertebral** interspaces (C6/C7; C7/T1; and T1/T2).Nov 21; 2016
