Industry News Digest: Summarize recent news or trends in the medical coding and healthcare industry.
I came across an article that discussed how artificial intelligence is shaping the future of medical coding. Here are some of the key points that I got from the article.
AI has the ability to pre-populate codes by analyzing charts and recommending appropriate codes. There are also machine learning algorithms that are able to identify missing information, which would assist coders with identifying errors early on. Furthermore, AI is able to is perform risk assessments, which would reduce potential coding errors.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) would allow AI to extract key information from physicians note and automate the coding process. NLP would also improve code selection because it would be able to analyze clinical documentation and suggest accurate codes. In addition, NLP would facilitate smoother communication between providers and insurance companies, because NPL can translate different coding languages.
AI would also allow the coder to focus on being able to provide value-based care rather than quantity of patients being seen. Making sure that all the patient's details are correct, and focusing on accuracy and completeness of the codes.
The importance of remote work would require the use of collaborating tools for strong communication, as well as, data security needs to be protected by implementing strong cyber security measure.
Coders need to stay up to date with ICD & CPT coding systems, and to increased focus on compliance by understanding the coding guidelines and regulations.
Embracing technology by being familiar with AI machine learning process and NLP processing tools,
invest in continuous learning by attending training and workshops, develop strong communication skills with healthcare providers and coding professionals.
